Contractors must comply with SOP from NSC, says Fadillah

KUALA LUMPUR: Contractors operating during the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) must comply with the standard operating procedure (SOP) set by the National Security Council or face action.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said authorities would not tolerate those who defied the SOP as it was crucial to ensure workers’ safety and prevent the transmission of Covid-19 at construction sites and nearby areas.

“That includes ensuring all foreign workers undergo Covid-19 screenings and be certified free from the virus before they are allowed to start working.

“Their body temperatures must be recorded daily before they are allowed to enter the construction site and any symptom detected must be reported to the nearest Health Office.

“We will not compromise if they flout the SOP and potentially lead to the spread of Covid-19. We will take firm action, such as closing construction sites and revoking the approval to operate.”

A construction site in Ampang was told by the Kuala Lumpur Health Department to shut down after 28 foreign workers test positive for Covid-19.

Fadillah said the Construction Industry Development Board received a tip-off on the matter from the department and an inspection was conducted at the construction site on Friday.

“The Health Department then issued a stop-work order and directed the construction site to shut down as per the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342). The site was sealed immediately and police were stationed at the entry point to control movement, as provided for under the act.”

He said no work was carried out at the construction site since the Movement Control Order began on March 18 and only a few workers were tasked with conducting cleaning work.

He said CIDB had been monitoring construction sites since the construction sector was allowed to resume operations under the third phase of the MCO.

CIDB checked at least 80 sites daily in Kuala Lumpur, including public holidays and weekends.
