NEW CLUSTER AT IMMIGRATIO­N DEPOT

Cases include a foreign detainee and two Immigratio­n Department officers

ANEW cluster at the Semenyih 2 Immigratio­n Detention Depot (DTI) in Selangor has emerged involving a foreign detainee, who is the index case, and two Immigratio­n Department officers.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah yesterday said the index case, Case 9,302, was tested for Covid-19 as the detainee was about to be sent back to the country of origin.

“Case 9,302 was screened for the virus at a health clinic and was found positive on Aug 27.

“Two Immigratio­n officers, or Case 9,382 and Case 9,384, had escorted the index case to the health clinic and they were both later confirmed to have contracted the virus.”

Case 9,382 and Case 9,384 were two of four Immigratio­n officers who had accompanie­d the index case to the health clinic.

Dr Noor Hisham said active case detection and close contact tracing were conducted and up to yesterday, 269 people had been screened.

In Selangor, 265 people were screened, with two positive cases,

123 negative and 140 are pending results.

In Negri Sembilan, one case was confirmed positive and three people are awaiting results.

Dr Noor Hisham said screenings for this cluster also involved 134 detainees, 129 staff at the DTI

and six of their family members.

“The cause of this infection is under investigat­ion. Preventive steps and measures to contain the infection, such as disinfecti­on and sanitisati­on, have been carried out at Semenyih 2 DTI.”

On Kedah’s Telaga cluster, he said there was one new case, bringing the tally to eight.

He said up to 12pm yesterday, 2,743 people had been screened in Kedah and Penang,

In Kedah, 2,737 people were tested, of which eight were positive, 2,075 were negative and 654 results are pending.

In Penang, six individual­s were screened, all negative.

Dr Noor Hisham said active case detection and close contact tracing for the cluster would continue.

Up to noon yesterday, 11 new cases were reported, bringing the total cases to 9,385.

Of the 11, seven were imported cases, involving two Malaysians and five non-citizens who contracted the virus in India, Saudi Arabia and United Kingdom.

Dr Noor Hisham said of the four local transmissi­on cases, one involved a foreigner from the Semenyih 2 cluster.

This patient was screened at the Beranang Temporary Detention Centre in Selangor before being sent back to his country of origin.

No new deaths were reported yesterday, keeping the tally at 128.

Nine more patients recovered from Covid-19 yesterday. A total of 165 active infectivit­y cases are in isolation and being treated.
