Face cover for runners
FACE masks for sports continue to be developed as manufacturers and consumers find a balance between exercise safety and performance.
Given that the Covid-19 pandemic isn’t ending anytime soon, brands are making face covers specifically for sports.
Asics scientists, engineers and designers at its Institute of Sport Science (ISS) have made a face cover for runners to allow them to train and run amid the pandemic.
While the official health advisory says there is no need to wear masks during exercises, some runners want to be extra careful especially with the third wave of Covid-19 in full swing.
The face cover by Asics pairs cutting-edge design with innovative air vents that give runners the room to breathe comfortably, while preventing the spread of droplets.
The face cover, which reaches online stores this month, has a quick-drying material that helps cool the air that reaches the interior.
ISS executive officer and senior general manager Kenichi Harano says that while the brand knows how important it is for runners to protect themselves and others while running, many find face covers uncomfortable and restrictive.
“So we created the Asics Runners Face Cover with cuttingedge technology, giving runners room to breathe comfortably while performing at their physical peak.”
HOW IT FARES
It’s a comfortable sports mask for running, thanks to its air vents that provide unobstructed airflow.
During a recent short run at the park, I wore it and found that the air vents did make breathing easier as they were located just under the nose.
After 2km, however, and given that the area was not packed, I decided to take it off because it’s just much more comfortable to run without one.
The material is water repellant, but I find it is too hard on my skin. From a sustainability point of view, the mask is commendable — it uses 31 per cent recycled materials.
The loop is adjustable. You first hook them on your ears, then the main loop is tightened at the back of the head.
But since I wear the hijab, the first part doesn’t apply. Thankfully, the elastic band secures the mask well throughout the run.
As much as I would like to run without a mask, I guess one day, when the organisation of such events is allowed, the wearing of masks may be mandatory for participants.
Runners like me need to learn to feel comfortable in them as it may just be something we all have to do if we want to run together again.
