Keglers gutted by hiatus

- Fabian Peter

THE national bowlers are not likely to see any action for at least another six months. Following a year of nothingness due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) are already prepared to brave another barren spell.

MTBC secretary general Maradona Chok believes it's necessary to remain vigilant, although it's a tough pill to swallow.

“As far as the bowlers are concerned, they want to get back on the lanes as soon as possible.

“However, safety must be prioritised.

“The bowlers will have time to regain their match fitness, especially with another long break following the recent announcement of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) in most states.

“I don’t think we are over-concerned at this time. When the players returned after the Movement Control Order in June, it was better than we expected.

“I believe the bowlers will be fine,” said Maradona.

Unlike other local athletes, national bowlers are also left without a training centre as the Sunway Mega Lanes, which is also a public bowling alley, is closed for the duration of the CMCO.

The Penang Pesta International Bowling Championship on Dec 10-19 have also been called off due to the worsening Covid-19 situation in the country.

Yesterday, it was confirmed that the Malaysian Games, planned for next year, has been pushed to 2022.

“Well, I think looking at the situation and CMCO everywhere, I think it is wise to move it later.

“I think we won’t be considering anything before May,” added Maradona.

Among the tournaments lined up for the national players next year include the Asian Indoor (May), Asian Championships, World Youth and World Juniors in June.
