1,294 NEW COVID-19 CASES REPORTED

Selangor records highest number of new infections at 455, says Health D-G

THE Health Ministry recorded 1,294 new Covid-19 cases up to noon yesterday, raising the total number of infections in the country to 347,972.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the daily cases, 1,268 were local transmissi­ons involving 897 locals and 371 foreigners while 26 were import cases (nine local and 17 foreigners). There are 14,246 active cases in the country.

Selangor recorded the highest number of new infections at 455, followed by Sarawak (217), Penang (139), Johor (103) and Kuala Lumpur (88).

“In Selangor, 374 cases are from clusters and close contacts detection. There are 22 cases involving clusters in prisons, namely Tembok Pengkalan Chepa cluster (18), Penjara Jalan Harapan cluster (two), Tembok Mempaga cluster (one), and Tembok Muhasabah cluster (one),” he said in a statement.

Dr Noor Hisham said the ministry recorded five Covid-19 fatalities yesterday, all Malaysians, bringing the cumulative death toll to 1,283. The three men and two women who died were between the ages of 37 and 80 with underlying health diseases.

“The fatalities were recorded in Sarawak (two cases) with one each in Johor, Penang and Sabah.”

He said 168 patients were being treated at the Intensive Care Unit with 78 cases requiring breathing assistance.

Malaysia also registered 1,442 recoveries yesterday, bringing the tally of recoveries to 332,443.

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham said 10 new clusters were detected, with seven linked to workplaces, two from the community and one involving a high-risk group. This brings the total number of Covid-19 clusters to 1,388.

“Two of the new workplace clusters were reported in Sabah (Banjaran Gading and Simpang Empat clusters), one each in Selangor (Bukit Angkat Industry cluster), Johor (Jalan Taat cluster), Kuala Lumpur (Jalan Bukit Nanas cluster), Negri Sembilan (Jalan Padang cluster) and Terengganu (Wakaf Chagak cluster).

“The community cluster was identified in Sabah (Kalindukan cluster) and Negri Sembilan (Permatang cluster) and one involving high-risk groups in Selangor (Pekan Batu cluster),” he said.

The workplace-related clusters that involved education centres were Banjaran Gading (Sabah), Jalan Bukit Nanas (Kuala Lumpur) and Wakaf Chagak (Terengganu).

Dr Noor Hisham said the Banjaran Gading cluster in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, involved students at an education centre at Jalan Banjaran, with eight new cases recorded since the index case was detected yesterday.

Both Jalan Bukit Nanas cluster and Wakaf Chagak cluster recorded nine new infections each up to yesterday.

Dr Noor Hisham also said the active clusters with the most cases were from Tapak Bina Persiaran Freesia cluster (76), Tapak Bina Sunsuria cluster (55) and Persiaran Cassia Selatan cluster (55).

He added that 1,025 clusters had ended to date, including nine clusters yesterday.

Clusters that ended yesterday were Penjara Seberang Perai, Damai Pelangi, Teknologi Berendam, Pasar Borong KL 2, Jalan Jasmine, Jalan Empat, Jalan Industri Kidamai, Subang Tiga and Persiaran Alam.
