1,300 new Covid-19 cases, 5 deaths recorded

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia registered 1,300 new Covid-19 cases yesterday with Sarawak registerin­g the highest number of new infections at 385.

This brought the total number of cases to 353,329, with 14,161 active cases since the pandemic struck the country, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

He said 1,276 cases were local transmissi­ons involving 918 Malaysians and 358 foreigners. After Sarawak, Selangor registered 242 cases, followed by Kelantan (126) and Sabah (112).

Five deaths were recorded yesterday, bringing the death toll to 1,300.

They were recorded in Sabah (three) followed by Selangor and Kelantan with one death each, respective­ly.

The deceased were Malaysians aged between 36 and 80. All but one had pre-existing medical conditions.

Ten new clusters were detected, with five of them being workplace-related, three community, and two religious clusters.

Dr Noor Hisham said the total number of active clusters in the country stood at 1,421.

He also said 11 clusters ended yesterday.

They were the Amanjaya, Jalan Industri A1, Jalan Sungai, Jalan Dato Sellatheva­n, Persiaran Bayam Indah, Jalan Timah Tiga, Jalan Jenjarom, Perusahaan Baru, Jalan Sementa, Jalan Subang and Simpang Tiga clusters.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said one more locality in Sabah would be under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) from today until April 20.

“There has been a significan­t increase in the number of Covid19 cases in the locality.

“To date, the Health Ministry has conducted 17 screenings in the locality and six people tested positive.

“The EMCO will be enforced in Kampung Murni C, Nabawan,” he said yesterday.

On standard operating procedure (SOP) violations, Ismail Sabri said 95 individual­s were arrested on Monday for attempting inter-district/interstate travel without permission, failing to provide materials for patrons to

register at their business premises, activities at entertainm­ent outlets, not wearing face masks and not observing physical distancing.

He said three foreigners were caught entering the country illegally, while three land vehicles were seized under the ongoing Op Benteng.

On quarantine measures, all the 661 individual­s who returned from overseas on Monday were being quarantine­d at designated centres nationwide, he added.
