SAFETY ADVOCATE HONOURED
Lam Thye: Consistent advocacy of safety and health vital, especially in workplace
ALLIANCE for Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye was presented with the MBAM Golden Helmet Award 2021 yesterday by the Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM) for his vast contributions to the construction industry and for putting safety first in his leadership.
He was presented with the award at the opening ceremony of the two-day MBAM annual conference on safety and health here.
The award was presented by Occupational Safety and Health Department director-general Zailee Dollah.
Present were MBAM president Tan Sri Sufri Mohd Zin and more than 300 conference participants.
Lee, 74, said he was humbled by the award.
“I am truly honoured to receive such a prestigious award which is in recognition of my work and sacrifices for over 30 years of consistent advocacy.
“However, this is something that I want to share with all who have worked tirelessly in championing safety and health.
“Consistent advocacy of safety and health is very much needed, especially in the workplace, and I am pleased to see an organisation like MBAM being very concerned over such matters.
“It is important that all involved in an industry such as the construction industry play their part in the application of the standard operating procedures on safety and health at the workplace.
“Be they developers, contractors, managers, owners, engineers, consultants or general workers, everyone must take ownership and responsibility when it comes to safety and health.”
He said an organisation like MBAM had a key role to play in ensuring that its members put into practice all the standard operating procedures on safety and health, especially at the workplace, to prevent unwanted incidents.
“Industry insiders must put into practice an OSH (occupational safety and health) management system because at any workplace, there are bound to be hazards,
risks and dangers.
“The implementation and use of such a system will help in identifying and assessing what are the risks and hazards that need to be managed and controlled.
“The principle is known as HIRARC (hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control), and this is what must be put into practice as every workplace is bound to have risks and hazards.”
