TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) should not be seen as a second-class education for dropouts or less brilliant students, said Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday.

He said TVET institutions in the country, whether they were private or public, were among the best in the world.

“TVET education is the core of the country’s human resource development.

“It ensures that new skilled workforces are produced, especially in fields that are crucial to the development and progress of the country.

“TVET education, which equips one with skills, promises wide and lucrative economic opportunities.

“Students and parents who are at a crossroads and looking for the right career, I would like to convince you that TVET education is the best and appropriate.”

Muhyiddin said this when closing the inaugural TVET Expo and Summit 2021 (TES 2021) in a prerecorded video, which was held on a virtual platform and physically at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Themed “Pendidikan Digital: The New Future”, it was jointly organised by online learning platform Ruang Cikgu Bhd and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia.

It saw the participation of 5,000 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia school leavers and more than 50 education institutions.

Muhyiddin commended Ruang Cikgu for developing the Learning Management System for the TVET platform for free for all participating institutions to facilitate digital transformation in education.

“This digitalisation cooperation is in line with the government’s MyDigital: the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint that I recently launched.

“I believe Malaysia can soar to a higher level if the digital culture is practised holistically in all fields, especially education.”

He said he hoped there would be programmes similar to TES 2021 in the future with more participants and exciting content.

Muhyiddin said he hoped that such cooperation would propel Malaysia into becoming the world’s digital TVET education hub.
