KUCHING: A man drove against traffic towards a roadblock at the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway on Thursday night.

The man, who is in his 20s, did so out of panic as his wife was in labour.

The woman delivered her baby safely at the roadblock set up under the Movement Control Order.

Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail said the woman and her husband were travelling to Sarawak General Hospital from Kampung Semera Ulu.

When the couple arrived at a traffic light near the roadblock, Aidi said the woman told her husband that she couldn’t wait and was about to give birth.

“The man, who panicked, decided to seek help from police personnel manning the roadblock, despite having to drive against the traffic flow,” he said.

“The couple arrived at the roadblock at 11.50pm and were assisted by two policewomen stationed there. The woman delivered her baby safely 10 minutes later.

“The baby was wrapped in a clean towel and started to cry before they were taken to the hospital by an ambulance.”

Lance Corporal Noor Fatihah Azelam, 27, one of the policewomen who had helped deliver the baby, said she began her duty at the roadblock at 4pm.

About 10 minutes before her shift ended at midnight, the woman’s husband rushed up to her and informed her that his wife was about to give birth.

“When I reached the car, I saw the woman was in labour and bleeding. I helped free the umbilical cord from the baby’s neck.”
