Cheng Hoe’s father dies just before match

than eight hours before Malaysia’s World Cup/Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam, Tan Cheng Hoe was hit with the news of his father’s death.

Tan Chooi Siak, the father of the national team head coach, passed away at 95 in Alor Star.

His demise came less than two weeks after Cheng Hoe celebrated his 53rd birthday.

Cheng Hoe and the national team are now in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates for their Group G World Cup/Asian Cup qualifiers.

The FA of Malaysia have posted a message of condolence to Cheng Hoe on their social media pages.

After last night’s match against Vietnam, Cheng Hoe will have to get the Malaysian team ready

against Thailand on June 15.

Cheng Hoe’s elder brother, Tan Cheng Hun, said he hopes the coach will continue to focus on his mission for Malaysia despite the death of their father.

Cheng Hun said Cheng Hoe received the news at noon yesterday calmly.

The coach told family members to handle the funeral on Tuesday, as he is not expected to return in time.

Football fans have urged Cheng Hoe to stay strong with messages of support for the national coach.

Ahmed Firdaus Jr wrote on

Facebook: “Condolence­s coach. You are far from your family and fighting for the country when you got this devastatin­g news.

“I hope you stay strong and hopefully the players can gift you with a win for the country and to bring coach Tan joy.”

Kong Sheng Ci said: “Deepest condolence­s to coach and his family. The loss of a dear one during national duty is not an easy one.

“Hope you stay strong. Come on, guys! Play your best and we’ll back you as always. Go, go, go!”
