KL City riding high

- Farah Azharie

KUALA Lumpur City coach Bojan Hodak can afford to relax as his team have achieved their target of securing 27 points in the Super League.

The former Malaysia Cup champions, who are sixth in the standings, have three matches left to play.

On Friday, the City Boys notched their first away win of the season by overcoming Sri Pahang 2-0 at the Darulmakmur Stadium in Kuantan to extend their unbeaten run to nine games.

Romel Morales (49th minute) and Zhafri Yahya (71st) were the scorers for KL.

The feat was achieved despite the absence of Nigerian-American forward Kyrian Nwabueze and Mauritian striker Dominique Da Sylva, who are injured.

Nwabueza has missed six matches while Da Sylva has not played in the last 13 games.

“Our main problem is finishing off our chances as our strikers are down with long-term injuries. We now depend on Colombian Morales, who is an attacking midfielder, for goals,” said Hodak after the match on Friday.

“I am happy with Morales’ performance as he has been playing well.

“I had anticipated that we needed 24 points to stay in the top-tier competition. We now have 27 points, so we are doing well.

“It will be a bonus if we can earn

points in our remaining three matches.”

KL’s remaining matches are against Terengganu (Aug 29), Kedah (Sept 4) and Johor Darul Ta’zim (Sept 12).

Meanwhile, Pahang coach Dollah Salleh has no answers to his team’s blunt attack.

“I have exhausted all options in the hope of sharpening my strike force. We had chances in both halves but could not convert them,”

said Dollah, who praised his third-choice goalkeeper Daniel Wafiuddin Sa’dun, who kept the score down with his brilliant saves.

“He did a great job on his debut. He helped out a lot today,” said Dollah, who had to use Daniel as his first-choice keepers Helmi Eliza and Zarif Irfan are injured. Pahang are ninth in the standings with 17 points from 18 matches. They play JDT on Friday.
