Nestle’s door-to-door recycling programme expanded to Subang Jaya

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Nestle (Malaysia) Bhd Bhd is continuing to make progress in its commitment towards a waste-free future by expanding its door-to-door collection and recycling programme to Subang Jaya.

Nestle signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) yesterday to kick off a series of recycling programmes.

It said the MoU marked the extension of its pioneering waste collection and recycling programme first launched in Petaling Jaya in October last year.

The programme is a voluntary Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) initiative aimed at implementing a more effective and integrated solid waste management system in urban areas and increasing awareness among members of the public.

“This will not only prevent solid waste from ending up in landfills but will also help promote a circular economy in Malaysia, in line with Nestle’s commitment to ensure that 100 per cent of our packaging are recyclable or reusable by 2025,” said chief executive officer Juan Aranols.

He said improving recycling through increased waste separation and collection at the source was a key element to deliver the company’s sustainability commitments.

“We are pleased to partner with MBSJ to further widen our kerbside collection coverage area. This will grant more residents an efficient solid waste collection system and provides an ideal platform to educate them on how to more effectively recycle.”

Since the programme launch last year, Nestle has achieved close to 80 per cent household participation and collected around 600 tonnes of dry mix recyclables.

Aranols said this proved that with the right processes and guidance, Malaysians were willing to engage in recycling efforts.

“We hope to scale up into more residential areas, in line with our vision to ensure that none of our packaging, including plastics, ends up in landfills or as litter, as well as accelerate our efforts to reduce usage and dependence on virgin plastics,” he said.

According to Nestle, the recycling programme already provides kerbside collection for eight townships in Petaling Jaya, comprising more than 20,000 households.

In collaboration with MBSJ, the programme will kick off its first phase beginning with Zone 1 and 4 in Subang Jaya (USJ3, USJ 3A3D, USJ 6 and SS12), benefiting at least 5,500 households.

It aims to progressively reach up to 8,500 households involving Zone 3 and 6 by year end.
