15pc of varsity students and staff unvaxxed

FIFTEEN per cent of higher learning institution staff and students have yet to be vaccinated against Covid-19 due to health reasons and unwillingness to be inoculated.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad told the Dewan Rakyat this yesterday in a written reply to Dr Lee Boon Chye (DAP-Gopeng) who had asked on the number of public university students who were immunised.

“Based on feedback from higher learning institutions, as of Oct 30, 1,101,779 of the entire population (of people in government tertiary institutions) have been vaccinated.

“However 168,000 or 15 per cent of them have yet to be vaccinated due to health reasons and also those who are still unwilling to get their shots.”

She said the ministry had counselled them and held special briefings on the benefits of vaccination and would continuously work to ensure all of them were vaccinated.

Noraini said the institutions were opened in stages from Oct 15 and only those who were completely vaccinated were allowed to attend physical classes.

She also said the ministry had begun vaccinating those working and studying in the institutions from August.

The authorities had also allowed students and staff to walk in to vaccination centres from Sept 9 to get their doses.
