Axiata chairman Ghazzali to retire on Dec 31
KUALA LUMPUR: Axiata Group Bhd chairman Tan Sri Ghazzali Sheikh Abdul Khalid will be retiring on Dec 31.
The Axiata board has appointed Tan Sri Shahril Ridza Ridzuan to succeed Ghazzali, effective on Jan 1.
“The board of directors would like to thank Ghazzali for his contributions to the company’s growth.
“He is the longestserving board member and has steered Axiata through challenging times towards greater heights over the years,” said the company in a statement yesterday.
Ghazzali was appointed to the board on March 24, 2008 and assumed the chairman role on Nov 1, 2018, following a short duration as interim chairman from mid-2018.
Under his stewardship, Axiata expanded its footprint in Southeast Asia, not just in its core business of mobile telecommunications but also that of infrastructure and digital businesses.
He was also part of the founding board responsible for shaping Axiata into a globally recognised multinational corporation quality institution.
Shahril was appointed to the Axiata board as an independent non-executive director on Nov 29.
Presently, he is a non-executive director of Malaysia Airlines Bhd chairs the board nomination and remuneration committee at Malaysia Aviation Group Bhd. He was also managing director of Khazanah Nasional Bhd from Aug 20, 2018 to Aug 19 this year.
Axiata president and group chief executive officer Datuk Izzaddin Idris said Ghazzali had been exemplary in his service to the board spanning 13 years.
