Bye-bye to oil and build-up

Products that deeply cleanse the scalp give hair more shine and body, writes Meera Murugesan

ICHANGE shampoos frequently. I have a few bottles that I use on various days of the week. My hair tends to become flat and limp because of residue build-up, and it becomes harder to wash the oiliness off the scalp, no matter how much shampoo I use.

Staying faithful to one brand or bottle has never worked for me. Switching between brands each time I wash my hair has been the only way out of this problem.

Most people resort to using a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove residue and make their regular shampoo work better.

RIGHT TO THE ROOTS

Sephora’s Cleansing Scalp Scrub is designed for deep cleansing.

Because it comes in a jar, one may mistakenly assume it’s a hair mask, but it’s actually a scalp exfoliant and is said to be able to remove 85 per cent of polluting particles after just one use.

It contains apple cider vinegar, which is known to add shine to hair, and sea salt to help exfoliate the scalp.

Its texture is like a thick mask and you can literally see and feel the sea salt particles. It’s meant to be used once a week to give your scalp thorough cleansing.

Just apply all over your hair and scalp, and gently massage to cleanse. I usually leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing for better effect.

It generally leaves my hair feeling super clean and despite its thick, mask-like texture, it washes off fairly easily.

The only drawback is that the scent may not appeal to many. It’s rather pungent but certainly, the product does the work it claims to do.

Hair feels lighter and bouncier after each use.

BALANCING SHAMPOO

Briogeo Superfoods also has a “balancing” range for hair, namely Mango and Cherry Balancing Shampoo and Conditioner. Both products do not contain sulphates, silicone and paraben, all of which contribute to residue build-up on the scalp and leave hair limp and lifeless.

The shampoo is in a lovely deep orange colour and has a very light, almost watery texture. It’s made for all hair types and has papaya enzymes to balance oil production.

I have oily scalp so this works fine for me. It cleans without stripping hair of its natural moisture, which is important, and I rather like its fruity fragrance. The scent is pleasant without being overpowering.

The conditioner, which looks like mango pulp, is a nice addition after the shampoo. I can apply liberally too because it’s not overly creamy and rinses off easily. Hair is much easier to detangle.

The Briogeo shampoo and conditioner is priced at RM126 each, while the

Cleansing Scalp Scrub is priced at RM90. All products are available at sephora.my.
