NEW COVID-19 CASES JUMP TO 14,944

More than 99pc of infections are in categories 1 and 2, says Health D-G

COVID-19 infections jumped to 14,944 on Friday from 11,994 on Thursday. Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the cumulative cases stood at 4,307,529.

He said 0.44 per cent of the new cases were in categories 3, 4 and 5, and the remaining 99.56 per cent in categories 1 and 2.

“Of the 66 cases in categories 3, 4 and 5, 35 involved those who had received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, 20 involved those who had received their booster shot, and 11 involved those who were either unvaccinat­ed or were injected only once.

“Half of the cases involved those who are aged 60 years old and above, and 32 cases involved those with comorbidit­ies,” he said yesterday.

Dr Noor Hisham said 14,045 patients recovered from Covid-19 on Friday, taking total recoveries to 4,113,831, or 95.5 per cent.

“A total of 206 Covid-19 cases were warded in intensive care units (ICUs), 109 of whom required ventilatio­n support.”

He said two new clusters — one education cluster and one workplace cluster — were identified on Friday.

Dr Noor Hisham said 507 people were admitted to hospitals on Friday, comprising 296 categories 1 and 2 cases and 211 categories 3, 4 and 5 cases.

He added that at the same time, 557 people were discharged from the hospitals.

He said 25 per cent of Covid-19 beds, 24 per cent of ICU beds and five per cent of Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centre (PKRC) beds were occupied.

Data on the Health Ministry’s CovidNow portal showed that there were 158,439 active Covid19 cases in Malaysia.

Almost 98 per cent of them were in home quarantine, 1.9 per cent in hospitals, 0.2 per cent at PKRCs and 0.2 per cent in ICUs.

A total of 31 Covid-19 deaths were recorded on Friday, including six brought-in-dead cases.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that a total of 77,834 children aged between 5 and 11 had completed the Covid-19 vaccinatio­n under the National Covid-19 Immunisati­on Programme for Children up to Friday.

A total of 1,358,791 children in the same group, or 38.3 per cent, had received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, according to the CovidNow portal.

For adolescent­s aged between 12 and 17, a total of 2,857,568 individual­s, or 91.8 per cent, had completed the vaccinatio­n and 2,958,121, or 95 per cent, had received at least one dose.

As for the adult population, a total of 15,908,442 individual­s, or 67.6 per cent, had received a booster shot, and 22,956,433, or 97.6 per cent, had completed both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, and 23,233,304, or 98.8 per cent, had received at least one dose of the vaccine.

A total of 34,904 doses of the vaccine were administer­ed yesterday. The first dose totalled 6,355, second dose was 20,260, and booster shot was 8,289, bringing the cumulative doses administer­ed under the National Ccovid-19 Immunisati­on Programme to 69,138,021.
