TAN Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing have vowed to win the Korea Open today for their supportive fans as they seek to end a five-year title drought. The world No 10 have a genuine shot at winning their first title since the 2017 Malaysia Masters when they take on experienced homesters Ko Sung Hyun-Kim Hye Won in the final.

In overcoming Indonesia’s Rinov-Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas Mentari 21-13, 22-20 in the semi-final yesterday, Kian Meng-Pei Jing have reached their first World Tour event final since finishing runners-up at the 2019 Singapore Open.

Pei Jing said world No 19 Sung HyunHye Won will enjoy playing in front of the home fans but she believes she and Kian Meng will not be short of support from the stands too.

Malaysian fans have been turning up at Suncheon City venue all week long to support their players.

“We’re grateful to see that many Malaysian fans come to the stadium to watch us in action this week. They’re loud enough, we can hear them clearly!” said Pei Jing yesterday.

“Their support means a lot to us and motivates us to play well. We want to try win it for them.”

Kian Meng-Pei Jing are determined not to let themselves get carried away despite having a shot at becoming the first Malaysian mixed doubles winners in the Korea Open history.

If they win the tournament, Kian Meng-Pei Jing also stand a chance of returning to their career-best ranking of world No 9.

However, Pei Jing said they just want to take it one point at a time.

“We have to approach the final confidently, but at the same time not overthink,” she added.

“As long as we’re able to produce our best performance, we always stand a chance against anyone.

“We’re not thinking about making history or ranking as our priority is to stand on top of the podium once again.

“We have been longing for this moment, it has been five years.”

Kian Meng-Pei Jing hold the advantage in head-to-head record, having defeated Sung Hyun-Hye Won in two out of two meetings so far.

“Both Sung Hyun and Hye Won are very experienced,” said Kian Meng.

“We have to keep a positive mindset throughout the match in order to win again.”
