Malaysia to host 2027 Sea Games

-

Sea Games Federation (SEAGF) have selected Malaysia as hosts of the 2027 Sea Games. The decision was made during the SEAGF council meeting in Hanoi yesterday.

Singapore have also been selected as hosts for the 2029 Sea Games. Thailand will stage the 2025 games.

The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) had in January submitted an expression of interest to host the 2027 Sea Games following Brunei’s withdrawal as hosts.

OCM president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria said: “This is good news for Malaysian sports.

“Other countries were also interested in hosting the 2027 games but they (SEAGF) needed a host who have the infrastructure and expertise to organise the games.

“After the pandemic, countries such as Thailand (2025), Malaysia (2027) and Singapore (2029) need to reactivate their sports industries.

“This will provide us the opportunity to prepare in terms infrastructure while our athletes will definitely be happy to compete on their home ground.

“I will inform Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Ismail Sabri and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Yaakob of the mandate we have been given once I return to Malaysia.”

Malaysia previously hosted the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games in 1965 and 1971 followed by the Sea Games in 1977, 1989, 2001 and 2017.

Meanwhile, Norza confirmed that the men’s hammer throw and women’s shot put at the Hanoi Sea Games will still be held. The two events were initially cancelled due to lack of entries, as only Malaysia and Thailand had registered for the men’s hammer throw. Only Indonesia and Thailand had registered for the women’s shot put. There are now four countries registered for each event, thus exceeding the minimum requirement of three nations.

Malaysia’s hammer thrower Jackie Wong had won silver in the event at the 2019 Manila Sea Games and gold during the 2017 Kuala Lumpur edition.
