KUALA LUMPUR: Solarvest Borneo Sdn Bhd has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) and Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd to launch a green energy lab in Kuching.

Solarvest said the lab would train and develop local talent to support growth in the clean energy industry in Sabah and Sarawak.

It will provide green energy-related learning programme involving solar, green mobility, battery storage systems and green hydrogen.

The learning and talent partnership is intended to spur research and development (R&D) collaboration and intellectual property creation in clean energy solutions.

Solarvest Borneo director Leon Liew Chee Ing said the programme was timely in nurturing the talent needed for attaining Sarawak’s vision to transform into a regional renewable energy powerhouse.

“As a Sarawakian myself, I am grateful to be able to contribute to the local community with CENTEXS. Together with Huawei Malaysia, we believe that human capital development is a vital step in building a resilient and progressive society,” he said.

CENTEXS chief executive officer Syeed Mohd Hussien Wan Abdul Rahman said the company was cognisant of the importance of equipping local talent with relevant hands-on training to enable a seamless integration into the industry workforce.

“Green Energy Lab has developed three programme, namely Solar, Green Mobility & Storage and Green Hydrogen. Hence, we are pleased to offer our facilities as the testbeds.

“This is a small step, but a meaningful one as we help Sarawak meet its aspiration for green power generation as outlined in the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030.”

Huawei Malaysia vice-president of digital power business unit Chong Chern Peng said it was committed to providing the best green technology and was continuously upskilling local talent in this area.

“We believe that the development of local talent in Sarawak will help us capture and fulfil the ever-growing green industry market needs and demands. The collaboration is a part of Solarvest’s five-year blueprint to transform into a regenerative clean energy expert,” he added.
