PM on official visit to Qatar until Tuesday

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be on an official visit to Qatar from today until Tuesday.

The Prime Minister’s inaugural visit coincides with the 50th anniversar­y of the establishm­ent of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Qatar, read a statement from Wisma Putra.

His visit is at invitation of the Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, who will grant an audience to Anwar.

Anwar will be joined by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

During the visit, the Malaysian ministers will also meet Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed Abdulrahma­n Jassim Al-Thani.

Anwar and his Qatari counterpar­t are expected to talk about bilateral relations, especially on economics and education, and discuss regional and global issues, including the Palestine-Israel conflict.

While in Doha, the prime minister will join the 4th Qatar Economic Forum.

He will meet Qatari business leaders and potential investors who are interested in participat­ing in Malaysian economic initiative­s.

He will also meet Malaysians living in Doha.

The official visit aims to strengthen the long-standing relationsh­ip and cooperatio­n between Malaysia and Qatar.

Trade between Malaysia and Qatar almost tripled from January to March 2024 to RM1.43 billion, compared with RM514.9 million during the same period last year.

In 2023, Qatar was Malaysia’s fifth-largest trading partner, sixth-largest export destinatio­n, and sixth-largest import source from West Asia.
