5 vehicles damaged by 2 uprooted trees

A car was badly damaged when two trees in Jalan Macalister here were uprooted yesterday morning following heavy rain.

Four other cars were also slightly damaged in the incident.

Bagan Jermal Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Nazril Hisyam Napiah said the station received a call at 10.01am about fallen trees.

Eight firemen arrived at the location 15 minutes later.

“Upon arriving at the location, two fallen trees were found lying across the road. One of them had fallen on the parking lot of a nearby building. The tree hit five vehicles and the building fence was also damaged,” he said when met here, yesterday.

No one was injured.

The owner of one of the damaged cars, Annie Chua, said she was thankful that the incident happened just minutes after she got out of the vehicle.

She and several other car owners had just parked their vehicles to go to a restaurant nearby.

“While inside the restaurant, I heard a loud sound followed by shouting. Fortunatel­y, we had just entered the restaurant or we would have been victims.”

The incident also damaged Karen Lo’s car, which she had just bought two weeks ago.

“Because of the rain, I stopped here to have breakfast when I heard a loud noise.

Some of the windows of my new car were damaged,” she said.

A Civil Defence Force spokesman said rhe road had been closed to traffic while the debris was cleared with the help of the police, the Fire and Rescue Department and Penang Island City Council.
