When one talks about the Macallan, one talks about one of the most prominent whisky brands in the world. Renowned for the finest craftsmanship, The Macallan has time and time again proven itself in terms of producing only the finest whisky, striking that perfect balance between tradition and innovation. The latest entry in the Edition Series has yet again reaffirmed its pedigree – the Edition No.4.

While the Edition No.1 and Edition No.2 highlighted to consumers the significance of the casks on the flavours of the whisky and the Edition No.3 educated consumers on aromas, the Edition No.4 brings an insight into the structure of the whisky, giving consumers a literal taste of how The Macallan distillery is constructed and the great lengths

in which The Macallan goes to in creating single malts.

A continuation of the illustrious story that is The Macallan’s impeccable oak casks and its abilities to truly unlock the flavour of whisky, the Edition No.4 is another product of the famed oak casks utilised by The Macallan. Staying true to The Macallan sherryseasoned oak casks maturation, each cask is meticulously handpicked, contributing to the quality, colours and flavours that make up The Macallan.

Inspired by the new Macallan distillery, the European oak sherry-seasoned casks from Tevasa themselves, which initially store the Edition No.4, provide the foundation of this limited-edition whisky, delivering rich notes of dried fruits and a layer of wood spices as well as root ginger. The whisky is then formed in European oak sherry-seasoned casks from Jose y Miguel Martin and Diego Martin Rosado, further enhancing its dried fruit notes while also bringing along notes of dates and figs. The structure of the Edition No.4 is then balanced in American oak sherry-seasoned casks from Vasyma, imparting vanilla, toffees and butterscotch, with the final product then perfected through refill sherry-seasoned oak casks, where the flavours are completed with the lively character of citrus fruits. Truly a complex process, but one that brings with it a masterpiece.

The Edition No.4 is bold to the nose, bringing along rounded honey with a note of sweet toffee apples. Orange zests then follow a background of ginger and nutmegs, while a robust, polished matured oak contrasts with the subtle green woody and floral undertones, a worthwhile product of the craftsmanship from the combination of European and American oak casks.

“Edition No.4 is a celebration of The Macallan’s whisky-making heritage as we enter an exciting new era, marking the coming together of our history and new horizons in the creation of two structural masterpieces: a remarkable whisky and a magnificent new distillery,” enthuses Nick Savage, The Macallan master distiller, with the Edition No.4 and rightfully so. He also stresses the significant role played by the oak sherry-seasoned oak casks in the production of the Edition No.4, bringing out unique refreshing qualities of the whisky, which result in an unforgettable whisky experience.

Located in the stunning Easter Elchies estate, the new Macallan distillery enables production of The Macallan to increase by a third if required, news that definitely bodes well with fans of the brand. A project that has taken three years and six months to complete, the new Macallan distillery is also open to the public, with visitor care that replicates the passion and thoughtfulness that goes into every bottle of The Macallan. The design of the distillery itself embodies the master craftsmanship The Macallan is known for, with the roof comprising 1,800 single beams, 2,500 different roof elements and 380,000 individual components, shaping one of the most complicated timber structures in the world.

Founded upon the Six Pillars, which has since been the guiding principle in which The Macallan has built its reputation – spiritual home, curiously small stills, finest cut, exceptional oak casks, natural colour and peerless spirit, The Macallan has yet to disappoint. In the Edition No.4, The Macallan has produced a whisky that truly defines the brand’s obsession with the mastery of whisky making since 1824.
