Syahredzan Johan
A Natural Progression
Call him a lawyer; call him a civil activist; call him the political secretary to DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang. Approximately one month after GE14, Syahredzan Johan was appointed as political secretary to the Iskandar Puteri member of parliament – a news that was widely reported. But he is quick to downplay his role, saying “Lim is a veteran politician and member of parliament, he does not really need my assistance.”
Now a partner at RamRais & Partners, he graduated from Cardiff University in 2005 before he was called to the Bar of England and Wales. He was appointed as the codeputy chairperson of the Bar Council’s Constitutional Law Committee, which came up with the successful MyConstitution campaign, in 2009. From 2012 to 2017, he was an elected member of the Malaysian Bar Council.
“After many years of being involved in civil society activism, I came to the conclusion that the most suitable way for me to make positive changes to the country is through politics. I also wanted to do all I can to see a change in government, so that is why I joined the DAP. It is a party with principles that I identify with,” Syahredzan reveals the reason behind his decision join politics.
Speaking on his future plans, he says, “Right now, I just want to learn. There is so much to learn about being in a political party. Thankfully, the party has also given me a lot of opportunities to learn, so it has been a wonderful experience thus far.”
