Four Seasons makes a triumphant return to the Thai capital with a contempora­ry riverside retreat

When the doors to the new Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River opened last December in a much sought-after location – on the doorstep to some of Bangkok’s most treasured attraction­s, scattered along the riverbanks – it caused quite the stir, and understand­ably so. It had after all been one of the most anticipate­d hotel openings of the year, and it came at a time when the travel sector was facing its greatest challenge in living memory.

As it turns out, from the moment of arrival until eventual check-out, f ine traditions continue at Four Seasons Bangkok. With its modern arch itectura l desig n by Hami ltons I nter nat iona l and ch ic inter iors conceived by world-renowned designer Jean-Michel Gathy, guests are treated with a visual feast in every wind direction.

Scattered throughout is an impressive art collection – curated by Gathy himself – while flowing pools of water pay homage to the ‘River of Kings’. Wide, open spaces are seamlessly integrated with green courtyards, sophistica­ted lounges and cosy nooks that exude a warm glow and cheerfulne­ss. The rich design details found in textures, colours and finishing is testament to a vision that is as much of a reverence to the past as it is relevant to the present.

The hotel is home to 299 stylishly appointed guestrooms, four dining destinatio­ns and lounges, event spaces and an urban wellness centre. Across nine categories, the rooms and suites range from 50-square-metre Deluxe and Premier Rooms with city and river views, to the 77-square-metre Studio Family Suites and the roomy 125-square-metre Executive Suite and 195-square-metre Two-Bedroom Suites. The palatial Presidenti­al Suite sprawls across an impressive 450 square metres, boasting a large living and entertainm­ent area, bar and catering kitchen, three bedrooms and an oversized terrace with private plunge pool.

My Premier River View room is a soothing cocoon imagined in a colour palette of rich creams and beige, complement­ed by blonde hardwood floors, creamy marble finishes, and white ceramic art. The beautiful setting with its high ceilings is enhanced by floor-to-ceiling windows that flush the space with natural light. A chaise lounge placed by the window is an ideal place to savour panoramic river views and the pool area. The adjoining en suite features a bathtub, rain shower and double vanities. The room is further kitted out with all contempora­ry creature comforts and premium amenities, including a minibar with DIY cocktails and a tablet for hotel services.

The hotel features a collection of fine dining restaurant­s and casual

establishm­ents that are led by Executive Chef Andrea Accordi, Executive Pastry Chef Bruce Trouyet and Beverage Manager Philip Bischoff.

During the day, the riverside Riva del Fiume Ristorante is a popular haunt to indulge in authentic Italian fare; from handcrafte­d pastas, gourmet pizzas and delectable crudo. Meanwhile, for something a little more casual, Brasserie Palmier is located by the riverside promenade – an all-day-andnight café that serves up brasserie classics and fresh seafood, paired with an outstandin­g selection of French wines.

Yu Ting Yuan is a Cantonese restaurant set against the beautiful backdrop of a verdant garden and zen pond. Designer Jean-Michel Gathy combined traditiona­l Chinese design elements with his signature sense of whimsy to create a dramatic dining space. In the kitchen, Head Chef Qiu Xiaogui and his team have crafted a menu peppered with authentic Cantonese and regional favourites.

The Lounge and Café Madeline is where the oeuvre of Executive Pastry Chef Bruce Trouyet shines in all its glory. His signature afternoon tea is a decadent six-course affair that is not to be missed. Highlights include young coconut with tangerine sorbet and Pina Colada foam, savoury delicacies such as Scottish salmon and Oscietra caviar steamed bun, whiskey foie gras praline, and sweet tarts that are just otherworld­ly.

For a memorable night out, the BKK Social Club takes the lead. Inspired by the old-world opulence of Buenos Aires, this sleek and stylish bar is all set to beguile visitors through bespoke cocktails, rare champagnes, and fine cigars.

The Four Seasons’ soon-to-be-launched Urban Wellness Centre, headed by Senior Director of Spa Sandie Johannesse­n, will be a new holistic destinatio­n that places emphasis on mind (spirituali­ty), body (spa), and work (f it ne s s) t h r ou gh de d ic at e d we l l ne s s pr og r a m me s a i me d at overall wellbeing.

During my stay at the Four Seasons, I had the opportunit­y to take a sunset cruise down the Chao Phraya River on a classic Hacker-Craft boat – an experience that was only recently introduced to guests. The one-hour cruise begins just before the sun sets into the horizon, and it’s the perfect way to take in the sights along the river.

A destinatio­n in its own right, Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River has one more card up its sleeve… the superlativ­e service that’s unmistakab­ly the final ingredient to a recipe for an unparallel­ed hospitalit­y experience.
