BACKSTORY

-

The decades-long partnership between Chopard and the Cannes International Film Festival 2021 has seen the maison take on a significant role as artisan of the prestigious Palme d’or trophy. In 1997, a meeting between the Co-President of Chopard, Caroline Scheufele, and then President of the Cannes Film Festival, Pierre Viot, took place, ensuing in the redesign of the Palme d’or, which was then presented the following year. Composed of 19 yellow gold leaves resting on a dazzling cushion of rock crystal, the hand-sculpted jewel went through another revamp in 2014, and one that is fitting of the times. As per the maison’s commitment to sustainable luxury, the Palme d’or has since then been crafted in ethical Fairmined-certified yellow gold, making it the only ethical trophy in the world of cinema. The coveted Palme d’or was last won by South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho for his astounding film, “Parasite”, which eventually set the stage for his historic Oscar win. With the festival finally back in physical form this year and taking place this month, it’s both sentimental and thrilling to see who will get bestowed this auspicious Palme next!
