At Christie’s Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels Spring auction in May, The Sakura realised an eyewatering US$29,285,318, setting a new record for the largest and most valuable diamond of its kind ever sold at an auction. The price works out to about US$1.85m per carat for the astounding 15.81-carat fancy vivid purple pink internally flawless diamond, whose natural colour resembles that of its namesake Japanese flower. What makes this gemstone so valuable is that less than 10 per cent of pink diamonds weigh over one fifth of a carat.
