An idealist armed with a Masters in Green

Management and Sustainabi­lity is a force to be reckoned with. Future Farms co-founder Shawn Ng is infectious in his enthusiasm about The Vegetables Co initiative, a necessary trait when hoping to spread the gospel of sustainabl­e farming solutions.

Consumers grapple with food labels like hydroponic and organic, but what they really want to know is if the food they are eating is safe, fresh, wholesome and, increasing­ly so, sustainabl­e. The Vegetable Co ticks all the boxes. Its bounty of leafy greens is grown in optimal conditions for maximum shelf life and nutrition, with a throwaway rate of just 2% to 3% for quality control – a fraction of the farming industry’s 20% to 30% due to rot or pests.

“We have reduced wastage to the bare minimum while producing very high yield,” says Shawn. “From 1,000 sq ft of space, we get 1,000kg of produce per month, which could easily double with high-production crops like lettuce. Our harvests are stable and consistent. While the numbers are incredible so far, nothing beats the actual experience of our product, watching someone smell or taste our basil for the first time. There lies the true satisfacti­on of what we do.”
