MAKING MUSIC MATTER

"I'm not try ing to be someone else or live up to others’ expectations.”

- KIM LIM Managing Director Universal Music Malaysia

Having been in t he entertainment industry for more than 20 years, the name Kim Lim is instantly recognisable for those in the scene.

Her tough exterior with an edgy hair style and tattooed arm doesn't take away from her feminism and cool appeal.

"Character wise you may notice that I come off a bit strong, but it doesn't mean we should lose our feminine side ," says the Managing Director of Universal Music Malaysia. Having spent eight years with Warner Music Malaysia and sometime in a digital company before she made the leap to Universal Music Malaysia, Kim's approach to leadership in managing the pillars of the company–artists development, marketing, and the overall operations of the company – may seem like a lot to handle but it does not put Kim under pressure as one would expec t f rom the leader of one of the biggest music labels around.

"I enjoy what I do. I don't really think about the pressure. The satisfac tion of the end result is what I always strive for," says Kim, adding that this also includes the obvious challenges she has had to face as a woman in music. Af ter all, there are only a handful of woman leaders in the enter tainment scene and Kim is tasked as one of the few who are set ting the stage for the res t.

To having a strong and dominant presence and making sure she is heard in order to l ead by her vision, Kim i s sure of herself and how she can propel the music industr y in Malaysia to greater heights no mat ter her gender. "I'm not tr ying to be someone else or live up t o others’ expec tations. One of the biggest things I always hear i s that dealing with women is dif ficult, as they may be more emotional, but in our current realit y guys can be overly emotional too!" she laughs.
