DREAM OF THE DAY

Ilham Gallery proudly presents “Dream of the Day”, drawing from the 1965 manifesto of the Philippine-born artist David Medalla. His work is well known for its influence in the British and global contemporary art scene since the sixties. In this showcase thoughtfully curated by Patrick Flores, Medalla’s work joins 38 other artists from the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Vietnam, Myanmar, Egypt, and Malaysia. The exhibition explores a range of media, genres, and sensibilities, overlapping surrealism with slow cinema, trans-performance, queer photography, and feminist paintings. “Dream of the Day” questions how the presence of dreams, monsters and myths sits in contemporary Southeast Asia, where modern life centres around concepts of realism, humanism, and nationality.
