Mix it up!

Shape (Malaysia) - - Contents -

AAs I read the stories of all our SHAPE Fit Girl finalists, one common thread really stood out for me; most of them do a variety of workouts in any given week. One participant, for example, does HIIT training, resistance training and dragon boating weekly, while another swims, cycles, runs, and throws in strength and conditioning exercises into her routine. Doing a variety of exercises is what I find keeps me at it, too. I do functional training three times a week with strength work mixed in, some basic yoga and occasionally a few bodyweight moves at home, and I hike on most weekends. I love it because it keeps me excited. And I work all the different parts of my body while improving on my cardio and strength. Most of all, I like how each exercise helps me to become better at the other. The functional training and strength work at the gym trains me for hikes, especially when I have to carry my own body weight (plus a 5kg backpack) and work those thigh and glute muscles climbing high steps. The yoga helps me stretch out those sore muscles I get from the gym work, and hiking helps to build my cardio fitness. All three, but especially the yoga and hiking, help me find calm while relieving stress when the world around me (especially work) is running riot. As one of our finalists said “I love mixing things up to keep my muscles guessing” - that is probably what it takes to keep getting better at this thing called exercise.
