Ab­dom­i­nal fat acts a lit­tle dif­fer­ently than other types of body fat—it’s more metabol­i­cally ac­tive be­cause it con­tains more re­cep­tors for a few im­por­tant hor­mones that play a role in the break­down of fat. Those hor­mones are re­leased four­fold dur­ing high-in­ten­sity in­ter­val train­ing, mak­ing HIIT the ideal ex­er­cise for tack­ling belly fat, says Dr. Cris­tian Al­varez. His re­search found that 10 weeks of HIIT, on av­er­age, helped over­weight women re­duce their waist cir­cum­fer­ence by 5.2 inches and ab­dom­i­nal fat by 18.2 per­cent.
