Known for its authentic Hakka cuisine crafted from timehonoured recipes, Ying Ker Lou serves up comfort food for the soul in a fuss-free setting.

TATLER TIPS

The more the merrier seems to be the best way to go when it comes to dining at Ying Ker Lou. Most of its dishes are portioned for sharing and may be too large if you are dining solo.

The Hakka pounded tea, aka lei cha, is a star attraction. It is available with fried rice and even noodles, although we find the herby broth best suited with brown rice for a healthier choice. Always a crowd-pleaser, the Hakka yam abacus is chewy and savoury, and topped with a liberal sprinkle of fried shallots and spring onions for a crispy contrast. If celebration is on the cards, be sure to order the Hakka penchai, which comes brimming with abalone, sea cucumber and scallops.
