Colonial Cafe mines nostalgia to linen-white perfection. The menu recalls the British colonial era when Shrimp Cocktail and Fish and Chips mingled comfortably with Hainanese Chicken Chop. Then there’s the dark wood bar in the front manned by affable staff in crisp white jackets. I ordered the Old Style Chicken Rice Ball, which was comforting and satisfying. The deal breaker for any chicken rice is the accompanying condiment, and I’m happy to report the homemade chilli made the cut. My dessert was a traditional Upside-down Pineapple Cake, which fell short of expectation but is so rarely seen that it’s forgivable.
