Ted and Bill were hol­i­day­ing in a friend’s coun­try cot­tage. One day they went to the near­est vil­lage and saw a ad­ver­tise­ment for an auc­tion. Ted said that he would like to have a go at bid­ding for some­thing and that they might get some real bar­gains.

‘ Pigs might fly!’ said Bill. ‘An­tiques are so pop­u­lar these days and many peo­ple are taken for a ride.’ Ted replied, ‘that’s more true of the big towns.’ Bill said that the well had run dry to a great ex­tent in the cities as far as an­tiques were con­cerned, and that more deal­ers were do­ing busi­ness in the smaller places.
