Petronas, govt agencies clean up Labuan beach
LABUAN: Petronas and several government agencies yesterday joined hands to clean Taman Damai beach here through a beach clean-up programme known as ‘Beach Rehabilitation Programme’ or Program Pemuliharaan Pantai”.
Some 800 volunteers took part in the inaugural programme, which was held with the objective of promoting greater awareness on the importance of environmental conservation among the local community.
It was organised by Petronas Chemicals Methanol Sdn Bhd in collaboration with four government departments/ agencies, namely, Labuan Corporation; Department of Environment; Department of Marine Park and Department of Fisheries.
Petronas Chemicals Methanol is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Petronas Chemicals Group Berhad, which i n turn is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Petronas Bhd.
Speaking at the event, Plant Head of Petronas Chemicals Methanol, Mahadzir Rani, said that Taman Damai beach was chosen because of its immense popularity as a familyfriendly recreational area and its importance to the locals’ economic activities.
“The programme is in line with Petronas’ aspiration of achieving its business objectives while carrying out its responsibilities towards promoting good environmental practices and the well-being of the communities where it operates,” he said.
He added the programme also aimed to cultivate the spirit of gotong-royong and environmental conservation among the local community and Petronas staff.
Also present at the event was Labuan member of parliament, Datuk Hj Rozman Hj Isli.
To enliven the programme, a contest called ‘Find the Waste’ was also organised, where participants competed to collect as much garbage as possible and segregate them for recycling.
Apart from that, several other activities were also carried out, such as colouring competition for primary school children, talk session on responsible plastic usage and a mini-exhibition highlighting the importance of preserving the environment and maintaining a sustainable lifestyle.
