Asia New Zealand Foundation presents photographic exhibition at UM
KUALA LUMPUR: The New Zealand High Commission and the University of Malaya (UM) are presenting The Crescent Moon: The Asian Face of Islam in New Zealand, which features images and personal stories of 37 individuals, including four Malaysian New Zealanders.
The Asia New Zealand Foundation commissioned The Crescent Moon to increase understanding of New Zealand’s Muslim communities of Asian origin. The exhibition has been successfully presented since its inception in 2009.
The Asian region’s debut kicked off in Jakarta in 2013.
The one-month (until Dec 13, 2014) showcase in Malaysia is on display at the library of UM.
It gives audiences the opportunity to learn more about NewZealand’sMuslimcommunity, one of the most diverse Muslim communities in the world.
The exhibition was jointly officiated by New Zealand High Commissioner David Pine, and deputy president of UM Alumni Association, Hamzah Sidang Muhamad.
The Muslim New Zealanders featured in the book range from fourth-generationNewZealanders to new migrants from Asia.
They are ethnically, culturally and professionally diverse, according to Adrienne Jansen, author of The Crescent Moon: The Asian Face of Islam in New Zealand.
Accountants, farmers, lawyers, computer trainers and butchers are all featured in the book.
The Asia New Zealand Foundation is a non-partisan organisation dedicated to increasing understanding and knowledge of Asia in New Zealand through a range of programmes, including business, culture, education, media, research and a Young Leaders Network.
