Man jailed, caned for gang robbery, causing hurt

SANDAKAN : A 32-year-old man was sentenced by t he Sessions Court here to 15 years’ jail and nine strokes of the cane after he was found guilty of gang robbery and causing hurt.

Mohd Yasir Bin Amit pleaded guilty before Judge Egusra Ali to the offence committed under Section 395 and Section 397 of the Penal Code and two offences under Section 394 of the Penal Code.

For the first offence, the accused was sentenced to four years’ jail and three strokes of the cane after he was found guilty for causing hurt and robbing a 30-year-old woman around 3.05pm on August 19 in front a shoplot off Lintas Sibuga Road.

He committed the offence along with two accomplice­s who are still at large. The woman lost a handbag containing cash of RM180, ATM bank cards and identifica­tion documents.

As for the second offence, the accused was sentenced to six years’ jail and three strokes of the cane after he was found guilty for causing hurt and robbing a 15-year-old boy around 1pm on October 3 at Sibuga Road. The accused committed the offence with an accomplice who is still at large.

The accused was also sentenced to five years’ jail and three strokes of the cane after he was found guilty of robbing a 19-year-old youth around 7.05pm on October 16 at Bandar Indah.

The accused was arrested by police around 9.30am on October 31 in front of the Court Building at Mile 7.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Mohd Fillanny Siji.
