Medan Selera food centre in Labuan to be relocated

-

LABUAN: Federal Territory Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the new Medan Selera, which was among the attraction for both tourists and locals alike for food here, would be relocated to a new and more strategic area for business.

Speaking to the media after visiting the new Labuan Market and the Ganggarak affordable homes construction site here on Sunday, he said the proposed area would be in front of Labuan International Sea Sport Complex, next to the Clock Tower.

“Some RM13 million has been allocated to construct the new Medan Selera building with modern concept and equipped with some facilities.

“A total of 50 lots will be constructed for the food operators in Medan Selera,” he said, adding that the tender to construct the new food outlets had been closed on November 11.

He added that his ministry and Labuan Corporation (LC) would look into complaints at the new Labuan Market, such as tiles where some part of the ground was not covered with tiles.

He also said LC would build compartments for non-halal products outside the new market, adding that LC would discuss further with the developer to overcome issues and problems at the new Labuan Market.

Tengku Adnan disclosed that the public transportation system in Labuan would be improved, especially in the town as there was no bus service available at night.

“We want to give convenience to the people here,” he said, disclosing further that he had also received some proposals from the private sector here especially from the hotel industry, requesting for land for their expansion programme to provide more hotel rooms due to the high occupancy rate for hotel rooms here on the island.

Tengku Adnan said the waterfront area would be considered for improvement as it was in ‘poor’ condition.

“One of the plans is to improve the situation at the ferry terminal, which is too congested for vehicles. The lane might be extended into three lanes for the people’s convenience,” he said.

Meanwhile, when asked about the current development of the affordable homes project at Ganggarak, a spokesperson from Maxcorp Development Sdn Bhd said it was in its early phase to develop some 1,560 units of the home.

The price of the homes would be around RM150,000 to RM180,000 per unit.

Also present were Labuan member of parliament Datuk Rozman Isli and LC chief executive officer Datuk Mohd. Nadzri Osman.
