Museums to immortalise ‘Mad Men’ ahead of finale

AMC HAS announced a number of upcoming events and exhibitions celebrating its iconic series “Mad Men” before the show begins its final run in April. Read on to find out where to see a replica of Don Draper’s office, and where his grey suit and fedora will be laid to rest.

Many of the celebratory events will be held in New York City, home of the high-rise headquarters of the Madison Avenue ad firms that inspired the title.

From Mar 14 - June 14, Manhattan Museum of the Moving Image will host the in-depth exhibition “Matthew Weiner’s Mad Men” – the largest showing of the show’s memorabilia to date. Included will be props, costumes, advertising art, set pieces and research materials that went into creating the show’s characters and setting its scenes.

The highlights for many are likely to be the large-scale set pieces representing Don Draper’s office and the kitchen from the Drapers’ Ossining home. What they read The New York Public Library will be honouring the show’s characters with “Mad Men Reading List” from Mar 2 through April 5, showcasing 25 of the books they were seen reading throughout the series. The books will be on display in three of the library’s largest branches.

Other events in New York include the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s “Mad Men: The End of an Era” on March 21, featuring talks with series creator Matthew Weiner and several of its stars, and further appearances by Weiner at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Museum of Jewish Heritage and the 92nd Street Y.

TheSmithsonianinWashington DC has been entrusted with some of the most iconic props from the show, including Don Draper’s suit, fedora and – wait for it – his office bar cart.

Those items, as well as other props, costumes, set pieces, scripts and research materials, will be joining the museum’s permanent collection on Mar 27, as will Matthew Weiner’s original script for the episode “The Wheel” along with an alternate ending.
