KOTA KINABALU: Organisers of the recent Specialised KK Duathlon announced that a bigger event is planned for next year as the growing pool of multi-sports athletes in Sabah are ready to compete with seasoned ones from West Malaysia, neighbouring countries and around the region.
Race director Douglas Yu said thisyear’sKKDuathlonregistered 350 participants coming from all around Sabah including Labuan, Kuching, Kuala Lumpur and a strong team from Brunei.
To attract a higher number of outstation athletes, participants may see the current distance for the4km run, 40km bike and 8km run doubled next year.
“Once we sort out the logistics and venue we will launch next year’s event. We hope to get the same support from our partners too.
"This year we very much appreciate the backup from Kinabalu Running Club, UMS, City Hall, the Police, Sabah Amateur Radio, Malaysia Red Crescent, Buzz Print, Redbull, Brooks, 100Plus, Salonpas and Specialized for the title sponsorship.
"Specialized even sent their sponsored athlete Ironman Choo Ling-Er, from Singapore who shared tips on her training during a clinic held for the participants," he said in a statement yesterday.
Winners won a total of RM30,000 in cash prizes and goodies including a grand lucky draw prize of a Specialized triathlon bike worth RM20,000 from the sponsors at the recent event.
The winner for this year’s Specialized Duathlon was Shahrom Abdullah from Kuala Lumpur, followed by Jason Loh ChwanChyinfromKualaLumpur and Mohammad Norisman Bin Ismail from Brunei in the Men’s Open category.
A pair of sisters originally from Penang, Veronica Uhen and Amelia Uhen took the first two spots in the Women’s Open category followed by Sabah’s Kona Liau.
The Men’s Relay team event was won by the pairing of Fabian Osmond Daimon (runner) and Nicklos Minol (cyclist) of Sabah, while Erwina Lola Bingku (runner) and Wilbinah Bahoi (cyclist) also from Sabah, took theMixed Relay category.
