Hash House Harriers donates to Tawau Hospice Body
TAWAU: Members of the Tawau Hash House Harriers donated RM5,000 to the Tawau Hospice Association in support of the association’s fund-raising event which was held on May 16.
Representative from Tawau Hash House Harriers, Lim Tiong Kiet, presented a RM5,000 cheque to chairman Datuk Victor Rajasekran at the Rumah Hopis Datuk Lau Gek Poh.
Victor thanked the Tawau Hash House Harriers for their kind donation and support to raise RM500,000 to run the Home Care Program and activities of the association for 2015 and 2016.
“The annual expenses of the association for the last two years was RM220,000 per year and the major expenses of the association was incurred by the Home Care Program for Hospice nurses who looked after 127 cancer patients during the last three years.
“The services to cancer patients are free of charge and the nurses cover patients living 35 kilometers around Tawau.
“As of January 2015, the home care program has 44 cancer patients comprising 45 per cent Malays, 45 per cent Chinese and 10 per cent others.
“The Hospice Association was formed 16 years ago and has a total membership of 383 people, including cancer patients, volunteers, life and honorary members. It has activities for cancer patients, volunteers and members three times a week at the Hospice House.
“A RM66,515 sum was set up for Hospice Cancer Patients Welfare Fund last year to assist poor cancer patients living in villages and rural areas for their daily needs such as pampers, food items, milk and transport allowance to visit Tawau Hospital for their medical reviews and collect their medication.
“The Hospice Association of Tawau has for the last 16 years provided holistic care for the cancer patients. The Ministry of Health has assisted the association with funds yearly, and last year the association received RM40,100 for specific programs and purchase of medical equipment.
