Promotion based on academic work and contribution – UMS
KOTA KINABALU: Academic performance of lecturers and contribution to the faculty and university are the two main considerations in promoting academic and non-academic staff of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).
UMS vice chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah said the number of papers published by a lecturer was not the only criterion the university considered in promotion of staff.
“We do not want lecturers who only sit at the corner of their rooms, writing papers, and do not care about what is happening in their faculties, and unwilling to help out in organizing conferences or their faculties.
“We look at their academic performance and involvement in the faculty or university,” Harun said this at the presentation of promotion offer letters to UMS staff here yesterday.
A total of 31 employees, comprising 11 academic staff and 20 non-academic staff, received the offer letters yesterday.
They are the third batch of UMS staff to be promoted this year.
Harun stressed that the university had revised the criteria for promotion to ensure the evaluation was representative of the value of lecturers and staff.
“We have guidelines in place, there is no element of favouritism involved,” he assured.
For non-academic staff, Harun said the promotion went to staff who were worthy of it, not to those who only looked good on their curriculum vitae (CVs)
“We want staff who have displayed their desire to bring the university to greater heights, not those who come to office at 8am and turn off their handphones when they leave at 5pm. Whenever someone wants to contact them for information on the university, they are difficult to get hold of.”
Harun added that there were staff that were placed on acting positions for a period of six months to determine whether they were qualified to become leaders of respective divisions and departments in the university.
Meanwhile, UMS acting registrar No’man Hj Ahmad said the offer letters were presented to academic staff who were promoted to professor of Special B Grade (VK6), associate professor of grade DS54 as well as nonacademic staff in the professional and management group of Grade 44 and 48, and office secretary of grade 32.
He said the event was the third presentation ceremony of promotion offer letters this year. The first was held on April 2, 2015.
