Over RM348 mln PTPTN loan collected

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of RM348.46 million in repayment of the National Higher Education Fund Corporatio­n (PTPTN) loans was collected between Oct 10, last year and March 31, this year, under the 20 per cent discount incentive for borrowers.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said 39,239 borrowers were given the discount for making full settlement of their loans.

He said the discount given to borrowers amounted to RM87.12 million.

For the 10 per cent rebate incentive, Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said it was taken up by 119,954 borrowers, involving a collection of RM331.45 million during the same period.

The rebate amounted to RM33.15 million, he said in a written reply to a question from Lim Lip Eng (DAP-Segambut).

Lim wanted to know about the discount KUALA LUMPUR: Special loans totalling RM153,113,960 were approved for 4,736 Kampung Baru Cina smalltime entreprene­urs as of April 30 this year.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Wee Ka Siong told the Dewan Rakyat yesterday that the loan facility was provided by Bank Simpanan Nasional through a RM100 million revolving fund.

He was responding to Datuk Wee Jeck incentive and exemption for PTPTN borrowers, as well as statistics on the collection of the loan repayment and arrears since 2010.

Muhyiddin said as of March 31 this year, repayment of RM13.32 billion was to be paid by 1,716,475 borrowers.

From the total, 1,110,790 or 64.71 per cent of the borrowers had started making their repayments, totalling RM6.24 billion.

He said 605,685 borrowers still failed to make repayments and the arrears had amounted to RM4.70 billion.

“During the same period, 84,308 errant borrowers had been barred from leaving the country,” he added.

Muhyiddin said borrowers who graduated with a first class bachelor’s degree could apply to be exempted from paying their PTPTN loan. - Bernama
