Dance crew wins Kota Marudu Talent Star

-

KOTA MARUDU: A fivemember delightful dance crew, ‘The Cheers Boston’, captured the Kota Marudu East Malaysia Talent Star title, beating 19 other talented finalists during the district final held at the community hall here last Sunday.

The five-minute performance of the five heavily made-up androgynous boys on stage was pure ecstasy, electrifying the boisterous crowd and the jury with their hilarious effeminate dance moves and superb acrobatic stunts.

Second place went to an ethnic dance crew all the way from Kota Kinabalu, The Kiara Kianz group with their very entertaining Bali-themed performance, facemasks, costumes, welcoming rituals and all. For their dedication and determination they were rewarded with the first runner-up trophy.

Third place was won by minisized but power-packed local songstress, Steffera Stella George who impressed the judges, especially Peter Dicky Lee with her strong and well-controlled vocal.

Peter in his comments, said listening to her singing and her very beautiful tone made him want to cry.

Best Costume was won by Labuan Sabah Idol winner Terrence Asangki. He was impressive with his powerful vocals backed by a dancer dressed in a beautiful white gown twirling and pirouetting with such exquisite and swanlike moves that a hush silence filled the hall.

Most creative award went to a surprise winner beatboxer, Arfvendrew Welonel who beatboxed his way into the hearts of the audience and the jury.

Third time lucky, The Soul Revolution, a three-member dance crew, won the Best Showmanship award after three attempts while Most Popular went to transgender Popoi who mesmerized the crowd with her gorgeous body shaking Shakiralike style and well-endowed booty, bringing the house down with her temperature-raising performance, prompting a deafening applause from the audience who screamed for a repeat performance to which she sportingly complied.

“All in all it was a superb display of awe-inspiring talents which I didn’t anticipate for a small town like Kota Marudu. We judges have a hard time in determining the winners but eventually after much haggling among the judges we compromised.

For the first time after seven destinations we gave a Special Jury Prize to a very talented local magician, Mohd Rafi who thrilled the crowd with his amazing magic tricks and we included him as a wild card to go to the grand semi-final to be held on July 25 at Imago Shopping Mall,” said Peter.

All the top three winners plus the four subsidiary winners are eligible to compete in the semifinal where they will compete with other winners from Sabah and Sarawak for the ultimate grand prize of RM5,000, courtesy of main sponsor Sports Toto Malaysia.
