Woman dies after falling from Sarawak’s tallest building

-

SIBU: Police here believe a woman killed herself by leaping off from Wisma Sanyan - the tallest building in Sarawak - early yesterday morning.

The 46-year-old, surnamed Tiong, is believed to have leapt from a window at the Level 21 lobby.

CCTV clips showed Tiong entered the building at 6.50am, which is 20 minutes after the building opened.

The CCTV footage also showed Tiong got into the lift, and at the lobby on Level 21, she leaped off from a window near a lift.

Sibu police chief ACP Mohd Kordi Kamal, who confirmed the death of Tiong, did not rule out the woman could have committed suicide.

"The woman who leaped from the building suffered serious injuries on her hips and left thigh. We have classified the case as sudden death," he said, adding that Tiong had been receiving welfare assistance.

A source from the police said the time when Tiong entered the building to when she plunged to her death was mere minutes.

From Tiong's handbag, police found a medical card that indicated Tiong had been seeking psychiatric treatment. Police are determining whether she had suffered neurosis and anxiety.

From her handbag, the police also found Tiong's bank books with her deposits in banks. Police did not reveal the amount, but it is believed the sum could let Tiong live comfortably for some time.

A driver whose car parked next to where Tiong's body was found said he and his wife had just entered the building when they heard a loud thud that seemed to shatter the ground.

"I rushed out to see her lying inches from my car."

He said her body could have hit his car and it could have hit him and his wife if they had entered Sanyan one minute later.

The man then alerted the police, who arrived within a minute.

Initially, police feared the woman could have been pushed out of the building, and so a CID team was summoned to the scene, too.
