M’sia Lion Dance C’ship preliminar­y round in Tawau Aug 9

TAWAU: Sixteen dragon and lion dance troupes will participat­e in the 17th Malaysia Northern, Southern and Central Region preliminar­y round Lion Dance Championsh­ip at Tawau community hall here on August 9, 2015.

First vice president of Internatio­nal Dragon and Lion Dances Federation, Leong Lik Thong, said the Malaysia National Lion Dance Championsh­ips were successful­ly held every alternate two year since 1983 and this is the 17th time the championsh­ip is being held.

Leong said he is pleased with the support and participat­ion of 16 lion dance troupes from East Malaysia. The participat­ing teams have trained very hard to ensure that their performanc­es are the best in terms of skill and standard.

“I’m sure all of us want to witness this spectacula­r and excellent performanc­e of world class lion dances. It is sure to draw very large audiences. It will provide an opportunit­y to raise the standard and skills of the lion dance performers further to another level.

“The wining team and the first and second runner-up of this preliminar­y round will automatica­lly qualify to enter the semi-final of the 17th Malaysian Lion Dance Championsh­ip scheduled to be held on November 14, 2015. The Grand Final will be held on November 15, 2015 at the Arena Star, Genting Highland,” he pointed out.

The prizes for the Championsh­ip are very attractive where the winner will receive RM15,000 cash prize with a trophy, while the first runner-up will receive RM10,000 cash prize with trophy and the second runner-up and third runner-up will each receive RM8,000 and RM5,000 respective­ly with a trophy. The six finalist will receive RM2,000 each. The remaining 10 semi finalist who did not qualify for the final will also receive RM1,000 each.

Meanwhile, the Tawau Federation of Chinese Associatio­ns president, Datuk Yong Chi Fui, also expressed his gratitude to the 29 generous sponsors for this championsh­ip.
