Satheishth­aran leads M’sia’s charge

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian junior men’s singles shuttler, R. Satheishth­aran is leading the country’s charge in the second round of the 17th World Junior Badminton Championsh­ips 2015 in Lima, Peru.

The 10th seed swept aside Costa Rica’s Zichong Alejandro Zheng Chen, 21-8, 21-7 in the opening round of the tournament on Tuesday, according to the tournament website www.bwflima201­5.com.

Also through to the next round are Yeoh Seng Zoe who defeated Alejandro’s team-mate Gianpiero Cavallotti 21-6, 21-5, while Lee Zii Jia edged Christophe­r Alexander Martinez Salvador of Guatemala 2112, 21-13 in another opening encounter.

The country’s top junior men’s singles shuttler Cheam June Wei, the second seed player who received a bye in the opening tie, will play against U Ieong Iek of Macau after the latter earned a 1821, 21-17, 21-16 victory over Italy’s Kevin Strobl in the opening round.

The second round matches of the tournament will start at 9am Wednesday local time (10pm Wednesday in Malaysia).

Two Malaysian women’s singles shuttlers - Lee Ying Ying and M. Thinaah - are also through to the next round after defeating their respective opponents.

Ying Ying edged Hungary’s Vivien Sandorhazi 21-10, 2113 while Thinaah dislodged Zou Zhuo Lin of Macau, 21-9, 21-5.

However, another Malaysian player, Qi Xuan Ng, failed to march further, losing 6-21, 12-21 to Lee Yu Rim of South Korea in the opening tie.

Malaysia’s top junior women’s singles shuttler Goh Jin Wei, the fourth seed who received a bye in the opening round, will square off against Denmark’s Michelle Skødstrup after the unseeded player defeated Damaris Mercedes Ortiz Parada of Venezuela, 21-6 21-11 in the opening round.

In the mixed doubles event, Goh Sze Fei/Teoh Mei Xing emerged as Malaysia’s sole survivors as another of the country’s pair were knocked out from the tournament.

Goh/Teoh, the sixth seed who received bye in the opening tie, edged Niels Veenstra/Marlies Baan of the Netherland­s in the a second round match which was played earlier, winning 21-13, 21-12.

Wooi Yik Soh/Anna Ching Yik Cheong were shown the exit after losing 14-21, 21-23 to Hong Kong’s Li Kuen Hon/Yeung Nga Ting.
