WWII VETERENS MEDAL AWARDS:

Nearly 70 years after taking part in the fight against Japanese invaders at Tanah Melayu during the 2nd World War, the only British Force 136 veterans from North Borneo were honoured by the Taiwanese Government in Kota Kinabalu yesterday. Taipei Economic and Culture Office in Malaysia (Head of Mission) Representa­tive Chang, James Chi-ping (left) presented the “Gold Medal” award to World War II veteran Datuk Chin Phui Kong (second left), 92, at his residence in Likas. Republic of China (Taiwan) Overseas Community Affairs Council Chief Secretary Chang, Liang-Ming (third left) also flew in from Taiwan on a one-day visit to especially present the “Honorable Certificat­e” award to Chin, and his comrades Liang Shi Ming (seated), and to the late Ho Su Shen, who was represente­d by his son Datuk Ar. Ho Jia Lit (fourth left). The Taiwanese Government will also present “Gold Medal” awards to Liang and the late Ho in the future.The government made the gesture as a sign of acknowledg­ement and gratitude towards the unsung heroes’ devotion and sacrifice made when defending Malaya during the World War II invasion. Also present were Lions Clubs Internatio­nal (LCI) District 308-A2’s newly elected District Governor Dato’ Lawrence Ting (second right) as well as family and friends of Sabah’s unsung heroes.
