KOTA KINABALU: Eight Sabah teams are competing at the 1st Miri Floorball Tournament which kicked off in Miri, Sarawak, yesterday.

Sabah Floorball Association president Jarrow Marcus said there are five men's teams and three women's teams from Sabah competing in the tournament.

“There are 26 teams all together and we are confident with the number of teams sent from Sabah we would bring strong challenges to the event,” he said.

“This tournament is an excellent preparation for Sabah contingent in the upcoming Sabah League and also the National Tournament to be held in Selangor later this year,” Jarrow added.

The association did not set any target for Sabah teams at the tournament but they are quietly confident of finishing strongly in both the men's and women's competitions.

Meanwhile, Jarrow said floorball is relatively new in the country and also in Sabah but he is confident the growing interest among youngsters will make the sport very popular in due course.

Last year Joerel Jarrow Jr Marcus and Travis Chong Chao Sheng bagged a SEA Games bronze medal in the Men's events, proving that talents from Sabah are capable of shining in regional championships.

At the national championships in August last year, Sabah bagged silver in the men's category and bronze in the women's event.

It was the state's first hosting of the national championships proving also that Sabah is serious about developing the sport in the state.

According to Jarrow, the association is actively promoting the sport to youngsters and is targeting more members to join this year.
