Govt all out in reducing carbon intensity, promoting green living — Dawos

-

SERIAN: The government, through Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry (KeTTHA), is committed in reducing the carbon intensity to protect Mother Nature.

Deputy Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr James Dawos said his ministry was working towards reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emission in line with the National Green Technology Policy.

“During the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in December last year in Paris, Malaysia announced its intention to reduce GHG emission by 45 per cent, where 35 per cent would be voluntary while the other 10 per cent would be tied into terms and subjected to funding, technology transfer and capacity development,” he said at the launch of ‘Jelajah YaHijau Sarawak 2016’ at Tapah bazaar near here yesterday. YaHijau, or Yayasan Hijau Malaysia, is a nonprofit foundation established by KeTTHA to promote and increase understanding, exposure and appreciation of green living.

At the function, Dawos called upon the people of Tapah to start practising the ‘green life’.

“Take care of your water source, and don’t throw rubbish into rivers. Your water is still clean. If we poison our land, we would no longer be able to plant crops.”

The YaHijau Sarawak tour, themed ‘Cultivating the Culture of Green Living, aims to give exposure, education, understanding and awareness of green living among the youths for them to practise it themselves. The programme hosts various activities including the ‘Green Heart Run’, aerobic exercises, contests for the locals, exhibitions of green products and services, as well as innovations on waste products by KeTTHA and other agencies such as the Energy Commission, Sewerage Services Department (JPP), YaHijau, and Natural Resource and Environment Board (NREB).
